NAU  Job 33:4 “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5 “Refute me if you can; Array yourselves before me, take your stand. 6 “Behold, I belong to God like you; I too have been formed out of the clay. (Job 33:4 NAU)

Thoughts from Job 33:4-6.

Elihu was the youngest of the friends that gathered to “comfort” Job.  He listened while Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar spoke.  Believing that they had not fully and sufficiently answered Job’s questions, he made extensive comments of his own.  While doing this he spoke about the breath of the spirit in man.

Elihu states: “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”  This sentence uses one Hebrew word for Spirit and another Hebrew word for breath.  The two words, however, represent the same reality.  It is the Spirit of God who creates man and breathes life into his body.  Although this is Elihu’s opinion, it is fully in harmony with the rest of God’s revealed Word.

The fact that the Spirit of God breathes life into us is true for unbelievers and well as believers.  Unbelievers should realize that their very existence depends on the actions of the Spirit of God.  If they would recognize this, it would just make complete sense to submit to the will of God and follow Him.
